NHL Roundup: Sharks top Rangers in overtime to earn first win

Will Smith scored 1:38 into overtime as the San Jose Sharks ended their first six-game losing streak with a wild 6-5 win over the host New York Rangers on Thursday night.
Macklin Celebrini recorded his second career hat trick and also assisted on both of Smith’s goals, tying his career high with a five-point night. Adam Gaudette also scored on a wide-open look in front of the net 1:58 into the game for the Sharks, who were 0-4-2 in the losing streak.
Taylor Raddysh picked up his second career hat trick, but it wasn’t enough as the Rangers fell to 0-4-1 at home this season. Mika Zibanejad and Juuso Parssinen also scored for the Rangers, who lost for the fifth time in six games and fell to 11-0-3 in their last 14 meetings with the Sharks.
New York tied a team record by losing its first five home games of the season. The Rangers also lost their first five home games of the 1943-44 season.
Blackhawks 3, Lightning 2
Ryan Donato scored twice, including the game-clinching goal on a rebound with 54 seconds remaining, and visiting Chicago finally solved Tampa Bay goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy in a win over the Lightning.
After scoring in his fourth straight game in the second period, Donato scored the winning goal on a long rebound following a shot from Frank Nazar, which was put in by Teuvo Teravainen on his second assist. It was Donato’s fifth goal of the season. Nazar had a goal and an assist as Chicago improved to 4-0-1 in its last five games.
Falling to 0-3-0 at home, the Lightning got a goal and an assist from Ryan McDonagh and a goal from Jake Guentzel. Nikita Kucherov had two assists to give him 999 career points.
Ducks 7, Bruins 5
Mikael Granlund had two goals and three assists for his first career five-point game, leading visiting Anaheim past Boston.
The Ducks scored four goals in a back-and-forth third period. Troy Terry and Jacob Trouba each had a goal and an assist, while Cutter Gauthier, Drew Helleson and Sam Colangelo also scored in Anaheim’s second straight victory. Nikita Nesterenko had four assists and Petr Mrazek made 36 saves.
Morgan Geekie scored twice, David Pastrnak had a goal and an assist and Mason Lohrei and Casey Mittelstadt also lit the lamp for the Bruins, who have lost six straight.
Penguins 5, Panthers 3
Sidney Crosby had two goals and an assist to lead Pittsburgh to its fourth straight victory, a win over Florida in Sunrise, Florida.
The Penguins, who have won their last three away games, also got a goal and an assist from Rickard Rakell as well as a goal each from Ben Kindel and Connor Dewar. Erik Karlsson and Evgeni Malkin added two assists each and Tristan Jarry made 34 saves.
The Panthers, two-time defending Stanley Cup champions, lost for the first time at home this season (3-1-0), but are 1-5-0 in their last six games overall. Brad Marchand scored twice, Sam Reinhart added a goal and Mackie Samoskevich had two assists. Sergei Bobrovsky finished with 11 saves.
Islanders 7, Red Wings 2
Emil Heineman recorded his first career two-goal game for New York, which earned its most resounding victory since the 2023-24 season by traveling to Detroit.
Tony DeAngelo, Jean-Gabriel Pageau, Mathew Barzal and Simon Holmstrom also scored for the Islanders, who have won four in a row after a season-opening three-game losing streak. The margin of victory was the largest for New York since a 6-1 victory over the Anaheim Ducks on March 10, 2024.
Dylan Larkin and Jonathan Berggren scored for the Red Wings, who have lost back-to-back ends following a five-game winning streak.
Mammoth 7, Blues 4
Logan Cooley produced three goals and an assist as visiting Utah beat St. Louis for its fifth straight victory.
Clayton Keller had two goals and an assist, Nick Schmaltz had a goal and two assists and Ian Cole also scored for the Mammoth. Dylan Guenther and JJ Peterka each had three assists, Mikhail Sergachev had two assists and Karel Vejmelka made 16 saves for Utah.
Pius Suter, Pavel Buchnevich, Nathan Walker and Philip Broberg scored for the Blues, who were 1-2-1 in their four-game homestand. Blues goalie Joel Hofer allowed three goals on just six shots in 7:57 before Jordan Binnington relieved him. Binnington stopped 15 of the 18 shots he faced.
Kraken 3, Jets 0
Joey Daccord stopped 32 shots and Jaden Schwartz scored three points as visiting Seattle ended Winnipeg’s five-game winning streak.
Schwartz scored in the second period, and he and Jordan Eberle scored late empty-net goals as the Kraken ended a two-game skid and closed out a 2-2-2 road trip.
Connor Hellebuyck made 25 saves as the Jets suffered just their second loss of the season after dropping their opener.
Kings 3, Stars 2 (OT)
Adrian Kempe scored the overtime winner in a second straight game as visiting Los Angeles edged Dallas.
Corey Perry and Cody Ceci also scored while Darcy Kuemper made 29 saves for the Kings, who have won back-to-back games to open a five-game road trip.
Wyatt Johnston scored and added an assist while Jason Robertson also scored for the Stars, who have lost four straight games (0-3-1). Roope Hintz had two assists and Jake Oettinger stopped 22 shots.
Hurricanes 5, Avalanche 4 (SW)
Frederik Andersen made 44 saves in regulation and overtime, then added three more in the shootout as Carolina beat Colorado in Denver.
Seth Jarvis had a goal and an assist and scored the only goal in the shootout. Eric Robinson, Sebastian Aho and Logan Stankoven also scored for the Hurricanes, who spoiled Colorado’s comeback night. The Avalanche wore the blue of the Quebec Nordiques and the Hurricanes wore white Hartford Whalers sweaters.
Valeri Nichushkin scored twice, Parker Kelly and Martin Necas also scored and Trent Miner stopped 20 shots in relief of Scott Wedgewood for Colorado.
Senators 2, Flyers 1
Olle Lycksell scored the go-ahead goal early in the second period against his former team, propelling Ottawa to a victory over Philadelphia.
Like Lycksell, Michael Amadio also scored his first goal of the season to help the Senators end a two-game losing streak. It was only Ottawa’s second victory in the last seven games.
Linus Ullmark overcame Tyson Foerster’s goal 29 seconds into the game to make 22 saves. Ullmark highlighted his evening by denying Matvei Michkov a point-blank chance late in the first. Dan Vladar stopped 31 shots for the Flyers, whose modest two-game winning streak ended as they fell to 0-2-1 on the road this season.
Predators 2, Canucks 1
Cole Smith’s goal early in the third period broke the tie and hosts Nashville held on to earn the victory over Vancouver.
Ryan O’Reilly also scored for the Predators, who ended their four-game losing streak (0-3-1). Juuse Saros stopped 21 shots, including Brock Boeser’s point attempt with about 1:40 left.
Max Sasson scored the goal for the Canucks, who lost their second straight after winning the first three of a five-game road trip. Thatcher Demko made 33 saves.
Oilers 6, Canadiens 5
Vasily Podkolzin hit a backhand shot from the front of the crease with 1:09 left as Edmonton rallied from a 5-3 third-period deficit to defeat Montreal.
It was Podkolzin’s first goal of the season, who also had an assist. Connor McDavid had three assists, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had a goal and an assist and David Tomasek, Adam Henrique, Andrew Mangiapane and Leon Draisaitl also scored for Edmonton. Darnell Nurse and Jake Walman each added two assists.
Cole Caufield and Alex Newhook each scored two goals, Lane Hutson and Oliver Kapanen each had two assists and Josh Anderson also scored a goal for Montreal, which lost for just the second time in eight games. Sam Montembeault finished with 23 saves.
