Brentford had to soak up many early pressures from their opponents who, after shooting a white man in their first four first League games, began to become desperate for a goal. But, above all, they had a hard time creating anything from a note in attack, while fans of the house taunt their sterile fate.

Andrews’ side got closer when Sepp van den Berg’s free header was brilliantly overthrown by Marco Bizot, while Dango Ouattara raised pulses with some encouraging races in the right side.

But it was villa that broke the dead end just before the break. McGinn won the ball at the top while the hosts were surprised playing back and fed Elliott, whose shot crossed Valdimarsson’s hands, through his legs and at the back of the net.

The race without scoring a competitive objective, which extended until May 16, when Boubacar Kamara scored against Tottenham, was finished.

Each of the following four penalties hit the back of the net, but Brentford got closer to the victory when the Icelandic goalkeeper produced another solid stop to push cash’s efforts around the post – and they finished it shortly after Damsgaard remained cool pressure to return the decisive kick to the house.

Andrews “delighted” to progress after “testing” night

Brentford head coach Keith Andrews has Sky Sports::

“I am delighted for the group. We have made a lot of changes tonight, with the players who arrived, the beginnings for Reiss Nelson, Benjy Arthur, in whom we have a lot of faith and confidence. Hakon was the hero with these stops after a night of testing.

“I just think that it testifies to the group. I don’t really care about the mistakes; these are the intentions of the players on a daily basis and they are always quite good here, so it’s a nice end of the night.

“I was slow to say at halftime, I thought that, after the first 10 minutes of the match, we were probably the best side throughout the first half, caused them more problems, we had a grip of the game, had more control, we became confident and we then offered them a goal. From that, we are in good place.

“We are delighted to pass.”

Emery: We are disappointed, but we see the improvement

Aston Villa head coach Unai Emery::

“We scored a positive goal. We drew. And the penalty shot we lost, so we are disappointed.

“We must become strong defensively and offensively and ensure good performance. Today is a part of the path. Not with the result we wanted but we have to accept it.

“There is still a lot of work to do, a lot of practice and matches. I think we are looking at an improvement. Not enough but a lot will be positive.”
