Exclusive: Google Pixel Watch 4 Teardown shows easy repairability

There are two T2 screws located in the pocket of the watch band, these, and you can access the interns of the Pixel 4 watch, no need to get married with adhesives. At this stage, the Biocapper center, which houses the cardiac frequency monitor and other sensors at the back of the watch, is always connected. Google has intentionally ensured that this connector does not need to be withdrawn for battery replacements. Kyle Wiens, CEO of Ifixit, which has teamed up with Google to sell spare parts for the watch, says that this type of connectors can be fragile, it is therefore always preferable that the design of the device allows you to replace the components without having to disconnect them.
To remove the battery, remove the haptic engine with the T2 head on a Torx screwdriver. Two other screws hold the battery, but once they have come out, you can disconnect the card battery and be finished. You will notice that Google has used T2 screws throughout this process. This is intentional because you can use the same Torx screwdriver for battery replacements, reducing the number of tools necessary for repairs. (A Torx screwdriver is commonly used in electronic repairs and is included in the repair kits sold by Ifixit.)

To replace the display, you will need to disconnect the Biocapper center. Then unplug the battery supports, unplug the display connector and unscrew the four screws that hold the glass to the case. (These are a mixture of T2 and T5 screws.) Overall, it looked quite simple, and it took Park for less than 13 minutes to remove these components while talking about the process and answering my questions.
Francis Hoe, Senior Product Manager for Pixel Watch, said that Pixel Watch 4 should always maintain the IP68 water resistance rating after maintenance. A silicone toric seal helps to create a seal when the two halves of the watch are placed together. Hoe, who has been the product leader from Pixel Watch 2, says Google has always wanted to make its smartwatch repairable. “It took us a little longer to get to this place – it required a lot of internal changes in the product; These types of major architectural changes take several years. ”

The design changes in the Pixel 4 watch are a big step forward for the repair of the smartwatch. Although you can replace certain components of an Apple watch or a Galaxy watch, they are not as easy to repair yourself. Apple’s self-service repair program does not cover Apple Watch, and in the Ifixit repair classification, Apple Watch Series 10 marked a meager 3/10. (The Pixel Watch 3 has won a 4/10.) Samsung told Wired that user repair is supported on its Galaxy watches (the Galaxy Watch Ultra has won a respectable 7/10 on Ifixit), but that does not include the battery for security reasons.
