The creators of “Stranger Things” can leave Netflix

Netflix could soon lose the creative team behind one of its greatest successes.

Earlier this week, Variety and other Hollywood publications reported that Matt and Ross Duffer, the brothers who created “Stranger Things” (and wrote and produced many episodes), were in talks to sign an exclusive agreement with Paramount (now under the property of the Skydance of David Ellison). Friday evening, Matthew Belloni of Puck posted that the Duffers had in fact “made their choice” and went to Paramount.

The ambition of the Duffer Brothers seems to have increased with each season of “Stranger Things”, as the episodes developed longer, the sets have become more spectacular, and the budget increased accordingly, with a cost of 30 million dollars of season 4 reported by episode.

It is therefore not surprising that the duffers are interested in making big budget films – an area where Netflix had trouble, partly because of its thorny relationship with theatrical activity, which the co -ceremony of the Sarandos recently described as an “obsolete concept”.

Although Netflix publishes some films in theaters, he resisted giving these outings an exclusive exclusive window before launching in streaming, which means that Netflix films are generally not displayed by the main channels.

It was, apparently, a point of collision for the director of “Barbie”, Greta Gerwig, so the first of her films “Narnia” for Netflix will play exclusively on Imax screens for two weeks (or more) before going to streaming on Christmas day 2026. And it seems that it was also important for the duffers, with Belloni reporting that the “theatrical component” was “Dealbreaker”.

The absence of the brothers will not be immediately perceptible on Netflix, which will publish the last season of “Stranger Things” in three (!) Later this year, and where the duffers have two new shows which should be launched in 2026. In addition, the Empire “Stranger Things” is developing with a prequel playing on Broadway, a animated series that will soon be, and a live spire that would have been previously Works.
