Warner Bros. revealed how many DC studios films they plan to do per year (and it’s not much)

The new DC universe took a promising start this summer with the release of “Superman” by director James Gunn, which is likely to finish as the biggest superhero film of the year at the box office. So what is the next step for DC Studios? The Warner Bros. division. Directed by Gunn and Peter Safran has “Supergirl” and “Clayface” on the bridge next year, with many other films at various development stages. Do not expect to see three or four films per year of DC in 2027 and beyond.

In a letter to the shareholders following a recent quarterly report, the boss of Warner Bros, David Zas, has established what everyone can expect from the studio in the coming years. “In the coming years, we are targeting 12-14 theatrical outings each year in our four key labels – Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Studios, New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Animation,” said Zaslav in the letter. Out of these 12 to 14 versions, however, no more than one or two of them will come from DC studios.

This is a revealing approach, because it seems that the new DCU will go slowly and stable, rather than throwing a brick on the gas pedal. Admittedly, DC Studios also produces programs for HBO and HBO Max, including the Green Lantern series next year “Lanterns”, as well as the animated “Creature Commandos”. But he does not do what Marvel Studios did before by doing his quantity game that ended up harming the quality of his production. Speaking further, Zaslav has established what to expect from DC in the more immediate future:

“James Gunn is busy preparing the next payments of the Super Family DC, including ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ (2026), ‘Clayface’ (2026) and the next” Wonder Woman “. In addition,” The Batman II “(2027) is preparing to start coming up next, among several other development projects.”

DC Studios does not bite more than it can chew

“In a precise and measured way, the DC franchise more and more superimposes in the broader efforts of the studio: from cinema and television to consumer products, games, experiences and social,” added Zaslav.

As Zaslav pointed out, director Matt Reeves will begin to film at the start of next year on “The Batman Part II” after years of delays, Robert Pattinson returning the Caped Crusader. However, Gunn said Pattinson several times will not be Batman in the DCU. Thus, the universe of the film DC of Reeves will remain his own thing, which means that Gunn will have to launch his own Batman at some point. It is currently supposed to perform with “The Brave and the Bold”, a film announced in 2023 which has not yet received a release date.

So, if we assume that there could be two DC films in 2027, what else could happen that year? The most likely candidate is the new film “Wonder Woman”, written by Ana Nogueira. She quickly became a favorite in DC Studios, after having also written “Supergirl” as well as a “Teen Titans” film live (which does not have a release date).

The biggest point being hammered at home is that the new DC diet will not put the cart in front of the horse. When Warner Bros. Launched the extended universe of DC, now disappeared, with “Man of Steel” by Zack Snyder in 2013, it was so in a hurry to catch up to marvel, it became a case too early, which condemned the whole business. This time, he adopts a more measured approach.

“Supergirl” is expected to go out in theaters on June 26, 2026.
