Pakistan reports three new cases of polio while Tally goes to 17 this year

Pakistan has reported three new Polio cases – two from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and one from the Sindh – bringing the total number of Polio of the country for 2025 to 17.
The regional reference laboratory for the eradication of polio at the National Institute of Health (NIH) in Islamabad confirmed the latest detections in Lakki Marwat, in northern Waziristan and Umerkot.
According to the press release, the cases involve a 15-month-old girl from the Union Council (UC) Takhtikhel in Lakki Marwat, a six-month-old girl from UC Mir Ali-3 in northern Waziristan, and a five-year-old boy from UC Chajro in the Umerkot district, Sindh.
“With these new detections, the total number of polio cases in Pakistan in 2025 has increased to 17 – including 10 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, five from Sindh, and one from Punjab and Gilgit -Baltistan,” said the press release.
Polio is a very infectious and incurable disease that can cause life paralysis. The only effective protection is through repeated doses of the oral polio vaccine (OPV) for each child under the age of five during each campaign, as well as timely completion of all essential vaccinations, “he said.
Meanwhile, a special vaccination campaign is currently underway from July 21 to 27 in Union councils, synchronized with the Afghanistan infranational polio campaign.
“In addition, an IPV-OPV fractional campaign began in the Chaman district on July 21 and will take place in the other Balutchistan districts from July 28, according to the press release.
