“Bridesmaids” (2011)

Annie perpetually single (Kristen Wiig) is chosen to be the maid of honor at her best friend Lillian’s house (Maya Rudolph) marriage. Despite being almost broke and being the most united person, Annie tries to do her marriage duties well. However, she discovers that she may not be up to the task when she leads the eclectic group of women into a series of unfortunate but comical situations. As things continue to spiral out of control, Annie must find a way to get her life back in order.

Bridesmaids is not only a hilarious, crowd-pleasing comedy, it also received two Academy Award nominations. With all-time performances from WiigRose Byrne and what was actually the escape role of Melissa McCarthyin addition to an intelligent and surprisingly emotional script co-written by Wiig herself, Bridesmaids easily cements itself as one of the great American comedies while also being a warm-hearted story about navigating friendships and changing life as an adult.

“Game Night” (2018)

Max game lovers (Jason Bateman) and Annie (Rachel McAdams) have weekly game nights enjoyed by their friends, but this week’s game night changes when Brooks, Max’s more successful brother (Kyle Chandler) joins the party and also ups the ante. He involves the group in a murder-mystery party, and when Brooks appears to be kidnapped, everyone assumes it’s part of the game. But the disappearance soon turns out to be something much darker, and Max must save his brother’s life.

With inventive and kinetic editing, precise direction from the directors John Francis Daley And Jonathan Goldsteinfantastic joke writing and incredible comedic performances across the board (special thanks to Jesse Plemons And Billy Magnussen), Game night is easily one of the best comedy films released in the last ten years. The film also features warm chemistry between Bateman and McAdams, whose characters evolve through a well-crafted emotional arc.

“Groundhog Day” (1993)

Cynical weatherman Phil Connors (Murray) reluctantly travels with his television crew to the small town of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to cover the upcoming Groundhog Day festivities, accompanied by new producer Rita Hanson (Andie MacDowell). But after a snowstorm hits during the holidays, Bill is forced to spend the night on the town – and he wakes up the next day rehearsing February 2. Initially enjoying his new life in a time loop, Bill soon becomes desperate to escape it, forcing him to endure an existential crisis that will change him and his outlook forever.

Sweet, funny and surprisingly philosophical, Groundhog Day is not only one of Bill Murray’s best comedies, but one of the best comedies of all time, expertly directed and co-written by the late great Harold Ramis. Although the February setting makes the film a great winter film, the humor and heart are warm and sweet. By mixing comic and dramatic performance, Groundhog Day served as the starting point for Murray’s dramatic acting career.
