Dispute over gambling leads to father’s death
The incident reportedly occurred late Monday night into Tuesday morning inside their home in Duncannon, a suburb of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Tragically, this all happened on Clayton’s 11th birthday. Court records indicate the situation stemmed from a dispute earlier in the evening after Douglas allegedly took Clayton’s Nintendo Switch. Additionally, Douglas allegedly told Clayton it was time to go to bed after a midnight birthday celebration.
Upset Clayton enters room, chaos ensues
Investigators say some time after his parents went to sleep, Clayton came into their bedroom while he was upset. Authorities report that a secure firearm in the home was accessed and Douglas Dietz was later found unresponsive. Clayton’s mother reportedly woke up after hearing a loud noise and quickly realized something was wrong before contacting emergency services. Police arrived at the home around 3 a.m. and pronounced Douglas Dietz dead.
Remorse and reality hit after a tragic incident
Authorities say Clayton became distraught and immediately expressed remorse. “My father died,» he allegedly shouted as he ran down the stairs.I killed my father. I hate myself.“
Additionally, investigators noted that the child told police he acted out of anger and did not fully understand the consequences of his actions. Pennsylvania law automatically processes anyone accused of murder, regardless of age, in adult criminal court. And court records show Clayton Dietz has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Jan. 22. For now, the case remains under investigation while the public grapples with the devastating outcome of a family dispute that resulted in irreversible loss.
